Akshata Murthy was born in 1980. After birth, Akshata’s parents shifted to Mumbai in connection with work and left Akshata to live with her grandparents.

Akshata’s father NR Narayana Murthy had told that it was a very difficult decision for her to leave Akshata with her grandparents. Every weekend he would take a flight to Belgaum and then take a car rental from the airport to Hubli. Even though it would have been very expensive to do so, Narayanmurthy could not live without seeing his daughter.

Akshata’s mother is Sudha Murthy, a computer scientist and engineer. Sudha was the first woman engineer to work for Tata, India’s largest carmaker. Now Sudha is working to improve public healthcare.

When Akshata came back to her parents again, her life was not as easy as it used to be while living in Hubli with her grandparents.

Every day between 8 pm and 10 pm, Akshata and Rohan used to do their school homework and their parents used to read physics, maths, engineering and history books or do office work in the meantime.

Gradually Akshata’s family moved towards prosperity but still Akshata’s parents kept a regular autorickshaw instead of a private car to take her to school and bring her back. Akshata became friends with many of Akshata’s friends while going to school every day by autorickshaw, even Akshata became friends with the uncle of the rickshaw.

Akshata went to the private liberal Claremont McKenna College in California, where she studied economics and French, before attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. He also worked at Deloitte and Unilever before pursuing his MBA at Stanford University.
